Cesar Millan is a renowned dog trainer, famous for his dog-whispering, no-nonsense ways of training, teaching and bringing out the very best in your four-legged friend. His fans know that one of his favorite breeds and their own personal dogs, are compare bulls. So does an American Compare Fluff Terrier fanboy have anything useful to teach us about training Yorkies?

You bet! Keep reading for some of Cesar Millan’s tips that can help you with your Yorkie.

Cesar’s Philosophy:

Cesar Millan bases his training lessons on two core philosophies:

calm assertive energy and
exercise, discipline, and affection… in that order
According to world-renowned trainer Cesar, ‘calm-assertive energy’ is the energy you project to show your dog you are the calm and assertive pack leader. Cesar cautions, that “assertive” does not in a way imply aggressive or angry. It means always be thoughtful and kind, but always softly in control. The dog in turn, takes action with “calm submissive energy, inch as the pack follower should.

As any Yorkshire Terrier owner knows, Yorkies can be overly assertive and aggressive towards other dogs, children in the house and yes, their owners. We ourselves makes them little divas. But that aggressive, hyper Yorkie is not only out of control, he’s significantly less happy and nicely balanced as he can be.

The second Building block of Cesar’s way

Exercise, discipline and affection, in that order — is Cesar’s other building block of enjoying your happy, well-balanced dog.

While most dog owners give plenty of affection, they fall far short on exercise and discipline. Even those owners who provide all three elements necessary to a happy, well well-socialized dog — don’t always give you the essentials in the correct order.

First, exercise

Cesar becomes this as walking 14 at least one hour every day, and in the correct way. No meandering all over, no dog-leading-owner walks. The walk is very ritualistic to your dog, and one of the most important ways to create life long bonds.

Then Discipline

Like a child, your dog needs rules, limits, and limitations. And just as you wouldn’t abuse your child, you don’t abuse your dog when you exercise these rules, limits and limitations.

And finally, Affection

This is like the topping on the cake. Once exercise and discipline have been completed, And your dog has shown his “calm submission” as your pack member, THEN we’re ready to give ourselves and our dog a reward.

Be-the-pack-leader

Cesar Millan bases a lot of his training on a simple idea: that DOGS are simple. They are animals, and their needs may be simple. Our job is to:

understand they are animals, and pack animals at that
know very well what they need
know how they communicate
realize why they behave the way they do.
When we understand these basics, we can learn how to achieve balance and establish pack command with Cesar’s amazing tips and techniques.

The Cesar’s way

This idea demonstrated from a place started on the Cesar Millan discussion board. It’s entitled: “Let’s get real, we can’t all become Cesar, nor do we have to” and it’s really a great topic of discussion and point of reference for new or frustrated dog owners and followers of Cesar’s methods.

A Cliff’s Notes version of the original post is that many people appear to fall over themselves trying to improve the perfect dog — an idea that may have been perpetuated by one of Cesar’s widely used books called “How to increase the perfect Dog” (A+ for marketing). It’s a mindset that sets many of us up for failure because we forget how Cesar became who he is. We forget he is a master in his field and has spent thousands of hours learning, developing, and refining (there’s that word again) techniques and skills that offer him the ability to handle virtually every challenge presented to him. It’s uncommon to consentrate we can “tsch” like him or claim space like him in a brief period of time.

What is reasonable is to expect you’ll adjust yourself. What I gather from Cesar is that Cesar’s way is a state of being. It’s a mindset. It’s as being similar to making change to be a healthier person — it’s a lifestyle decision. Most people can’t maintain a sound body by not exercising regularly and eating a good diet consistently. That’s why short term plans don’t work — it requires continued commitment for as long as you want to see results. Whether it’s great health, it ought to be forever. Whether it’s a balanced dog, that commitment should be forever as well.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step (I forget who said that first, eliminate me). So my advice is not in order to become Cesar. Instead, my advice is to be Your own Cesar. As i mentioned, Cesar’s way is a lifestyle. Changing your current lifestyle to provide optimal (relative to your position) fulfillment to your dog is not easy, nor is it quick. But my model of Cesar’s way is routine behaviors, being mindful in our energy and the energy in our surroundings, and the desire to continue to learn. That’s it. We can all improve something in our lives, whether it’s not spending so much time on the internet or minimizing junk food. Do a little bit every week. You’ll find the time. You’ll develop the vitality. You’ll be conscious of the changes in yourself and in your dog and hopefully, that’s enough motivation to continue to become your own (insert your name here).

As the backyard chicken becomes more and more popular in urban and suburban areas, many people find they don’t mind and even wish to encourage their chickens to become house pets. Although a rooster should never be kept as a pet because it can become territorial and aggressive, a hen in the house can be a pleasant companion, is easy to care for and even provides you with breakfast.

Check your local zoning laws before deciding to have chickens as pets. Those who live in rural areas will likely not have a problem, but those who live in more urban areas may need a permit.

Set up a cage or coop where your chicken will roost. Even if you intend to let the chicken roam free in the house and the yard, it will need a place to spend the night, get food and water and lay eggs. Some people find it is easier to just use a large cage made for guinea pigs inside the house, while others prefer to use a smaller coop placed in the garage or in the yard.

Use newspaper to cover the places where you allow your chicken to hang out in the house. Chickens are not capable of house training, so you will have to clean up after them often. Limiting their access to certain areas of the house can help keep down the amount of cleaning you have to do.

Look into using chicken diapers if you want your chicken to be able to roam around freely without worrying about cleaning up after it all of the time. A number of chicken lovers have started businesses making and selling small diapers for chickens. They are made of reusable fabric and attached to the stiff tail feathers of the chicken.

Find a place where your chickens can go outside to get fresh air, pick at plants and bugs, scratch in the dirt and get some sunlight. Even if they are house pets, you still need to provide the chickens with a safe place to hang outside during the day. Even in the winter, chickens enjoy getting outside.

Use poultry netting stapled to small fence posts or wooden stakes and driven into the ground to create a protected space for your chickens to play outside. Chickens cannot be trained to not go in the road or down the sidewalk, although they will rarely fly off. You must protect them with poultry netting from roads and predators, like the neighborhood dog or cat.

Feed your chicken well, either outside or in his coop or cage. Pellets and feed for chickens is available at your local feed store. Chickens can also eat kitchen scraps like leftover salad, vegetables and meat — as long as it’s not chicken. Chickens prefer a varied diet and will produce better eggs with the more nutrition they get.

Mix a handful of crushed oyster shells, available from your feed store, or sand in with their feed. This gives them the grit necessary for digesting their food. All chickens require grit to stay healthy. The oyster shells also help keep the shells on chickens’ eggs hard.

Handle your chickens often, if they are to be pets. Pick them up, stroke them and feed them by hand. Chickens are not by nature a pet animal, but do enjoy handling if it is done often enough.
